2021 The Year Irish Unity Made Headlines in the US and Ireland
This week we will be looking back at the stories of the year and no better place to start than St. Patrick’s Day and the Irish Unity Ads.
The ads were jointly signed by the LAOH, AOH, James Connolly Labor Coalition. Irish American Unity Conference and the Brehon Law Society. Their impact was felt on both sides of the Atlantic. It introduced a new generation of Americans to the peaceful potential of achieving Irish Unity.
It challenged the Irish Government to begin to plan for unity and for the British Government to set the time frame for calling a unity referendum.
In Ireland, it caused quite a stir with widespread coverage and the national broadcaster RTE setting aside a 90-minute program focused on the unity question.
Well done to all involved and here is our report from the day…….
From March 10th 2021
'Today, Friends of Sinn Féin USA's Irish Unity ad campaign went live in the United States. We want to thank you for your support of Friends of Sinn Féin and our St Patrick's Day Fundraising Drive.
Our 'United Ireland, Let The People Have Their Say' ads went out today in the New York Times, Washington Post as well as local Irish-American newspapers, the Irish Echo, and Irish Voice.
Five other Irish-American organizations co-signed our letter and we are proud to stand with them for Irish Unity. We are already receiving tremendous feedback from the ads, and the best is yet to come.
Today, Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald said "I commend the groups involved for their common sense call for the Irish government to prepare and promote Irish Unity as part of an informed, respectful and inclusive process and for the British government to set the date for the Unity Referendum."
As Gerry Adams famously said this year: “This generation of Americans could be the first to visit a free and united Ireland.”
We are doing our best to make this a reality, and with your help, we will do just that.
Thank you for your support.'
