As Post-Brexit Trade Problems Arise, DUP Lashes Out

PM Boris Johnson and DUP Leader Arlene Foster

The disaster of Brexit is coming back to haunt the DUP. The DUP promoted Brexit against the will of the majority of the people of the North, the best interests of the economy, and the peace agreements. It is now clear to all the Brexit that the DUP promoted will hurt the people of the North economically and its starting with exports to the North. The DUP has a plan to distract from that though.

The US was central in securing an Irish Protocol and a Withdrawal Agreement that would protect the Good Friday Agreement and prevent a hard border on the island of Ireland.

Under pressure from falling poll numbers, their worst in 20 years, the DUP have now started a campaign to end the Irish Protocol. It is a transparent attempt to shift the blame away from their support for a Brexit.

In recent days a DUP controlled council withdrew their workers from Larne Harbor, one of the inspection sites, claiming threats from unknown unionists paramilitaries. This was followed by the DUP Minister for Agriculture withdrawing his departments' inspection workers from the ports of Larne and Belfast. This left the EU with no option but to remove their workers pending an assessment by the Police. The police last night said that they, “Had no information to collaborate or substantiate the claims. In other words this is a fabricated distraction.

What we are seeing is the DUP deliberately increasing tensions and threatening to undermine the institutions of the Good Friday Agreement to shore up their shrinking electoral base.

Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald said, “The position adopted by the DUP is reckless and is not driven by the best interests of the people of the North. I urge them to pull back.

Now is the time for calm leadership and solutions to deal with the disruption which has arisen as a result of Brexit."
