Finucane Briefs Mass State Legislature

John Finucane MP Briefs Over 50 Members of the Massachusetts State Legislature

Today, John Finucane, Sinn Féin MP for North Belfast briefed the Massachusetts State Legislature on developments in Ireland. Mr Finucane discussed the current state of unionism in the North in the aftermath of Brexit and the effect the British government’s abdication of their responsibilities under the agreements is having island-wide.

Mr Finucane also spoke about legacy issues, including the recent news that the Council of Europe has reopened the investigation into the killing of his father, human rights lawyer Pat Finucane by British state forces in 1989. It is important that there is recognition that a full public inquiry is required to establish the truth and the extent of state collusion in this killing. John thanked them for their decision.

The North Belfast MP also stressed the importance of the Good Friday Agreement, and America’s support of it. The Good Friday Agreement provides the legal basis for managing change and resolving the multitude of complicated issues facing Ireland.

We want to thank the members of the Massachusetts State legislature for attending and especially Senator Joan Lovely and Rep Jerry Parisella for sponsoring the briefing. We look forward to doing these briefings in person soon when we are again able to visit once again.
