Finucane's Trip Kicked Off 2020

John Finucane with the Friends of Ireland Caucus in The Capitol Building

2020 was a tough year for everyone but at the same time was successful year for

Sinn Féin and the struggle for Irish Unity. The historic February elections saw Mary Lou McDonald and Sinn Féin become the official opposition party in the Dail. Sinn Féin achieved historic poll numbers and showed the leadership necessary to lead a new and united Ireland of the future. John Finucane shocked the political class when he won the MP seat in North Belfast, once a bastion of unionism in the 2019 general election. Shortly after his win John visited the United States to talk about what was coming next and to set the stage for 2020.

In January, John Finucane and Sinn Fein Representative to the United States Ciaran Quinn kicked 2020 off when they travelled across the Atlantic to New York City and Washington DC. John briefed the Friends of Ireland Caucus at the US Capitol, updating members of Congress about Brexit, the process for getting the the institutions up and running, his fathers murder and the path to a united Ireland. John and Ciaran then traveled north and John spoke at the New York Bar Association in New York City at an event hosted by the Brehon Law Society of New York. John touched on legacy issues and unity among other topics.

The events were a great success and proved to be a springboard for things to come for 2020 politically. We look forward to hosting John and other Sinn Féin officials in 2021 when the world gets back to normalcy. Thanks to all your support for Friends of Sinn Fein. As Bobby Sands said, we all have a part to play, and your steadfastness is highly valued.
