Irish and US Senate United in Support of Good Friday Agreement
When Washington talks people listen. Over the past week, Congress has made two very significant contributions to maintaining peace and progress in Ireland. Representative Bill Keating and 24 other members of the House wrote to President Biden calling for the appointment of a Special Envoy to Ireland.
The Senate under the leadership of Senators Menendez and Collins passed a unanimous resolution reaffirming support for The Good Friday and subsequent agreements.
Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald welcomed these initiatives saying,
“This is an extremely welcome intervention at a time when our agreements are being challenged by a reckless British Government and a section of rejectionist unionists.
The Good Friday Agreement must prevail. The primacy of democracy and peace must triumph over threat and bad faith.
The US values our agreements and political process”
Meanwhile, Senator Niall O Donnghaile of Sinn Féin raised the US interventions in the Irish Senate. On the back of this, the Government leader in the Senate agreed to write to the US Senate welcoming their initiative and supporting the call for a Special Envoy.
